Nestled in Tacoma, Washington, Field Bar and Bottle Shop delivers an intimate and thoughtfully curated experience that merges a cozy atmosphere with an exciting selection of craft drinks and local ingredients. During my recent visit on September 13, 2024, I had the pleasure of exploring their offerings, and it’s clear why Field is a local favorite.
Atmosphere: 8/10
Field Bar and Bottle Shop offers a welcoming and intimate setting, perfect for a quiet evening or a casual drink with friends. The space itself is small but charming, with a cozy bar top and intimate tables that encourage conversation. What adds to the unique vibe is the bottle shop nestled inside, giving patrons the chance to browse a well-curated selection of wines, spirits, beers, and non-alcoholic options. The ambiance is casual yet polished, making it an ideal spot for those who appreciate both craft beverages and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
Beverages: 9/10
Field’s drink menu is where it truly shines. The bar’s craft cocktails are nothing short of impressive, showcasing the skill of the mixologists behind the counter. I started the evening with an Old Fashioned, a well-executed classic that balanced smoothness and depth perfectly. Next, I ventured into something more experimental—a gin-based drink with a unique flavor profile that was both refreshing and layered with complexity. Each cocktail felt carefully crafted, with a creative twist that highlights the bartenders' expertise and commitment to offering something special.
Food: 9/10
Moving onto the food, Field’s menu exceeded expectations. The dishes are prepared with locally sourced ingredients, which added a farm-to-table freshness that elevated the experience.
We began with the Breaded Oysters—my first time trying this dish, and it was incredible. Crispy on the outside and bursting with flavor, they were the perfect start. Next came the Tomatoes & Shiitakes dish, which combined Local Color Farm heirloom tomatoes with a delightful roasted tomato ricotta, tamari-pickled shiitakes, and bonito furikake. The flavors were vibrant, and the texture of the tomato mousse was unexpectedly delightful.
For the main course, I opted for the Beef Chuck Short Rib. The strawberry BBQ glaze provided a surprising sweet-and-smoky balance to the tender beef, while the cold couscous salad and chestnut mushrooms added depth to the dish. The baharat yogurt and hazelnuts tied everything together beautifully, creating a meal that was both unique and satisfying.
Experience: 10/10
What truly set Field Bar and Bottle Shop apart was the exceptional service. Our server was not only knowledgeable but also deeply passionate about the food and drinks she was presenting. From the moment she introduced herself, she made us feel welcome, excitedly sharing her recommendations and explaining the specials in detail. Her enthusiasm was infectious, and it was clear she took pride in the menu. She was attentive without being overbearing, and her genuine engagement with us made the experience all the more enjoyable.
Beyond her product knowledge, she showed a clear passion for hospitality—ensuring that we felt taken care of throughout the evening. Her confidence in recommending dishes and drinks gave us the assurance that we were in for a fantastic experience, and she checked in just the right amount to make sure everything was to our liking. It’s rare to find service this attentive and passionate, and it made a lasting impression.
In addition to the impeccable service, the retail selection of bottles was impressive. With a wide variety of wines, spirits, beers, and non-alcoholic options, Field goes beyond just being a bar—it's also a destination for picking up high-quality bottles to take home.
Overall Review: 9/10
